Sunrise and Sunset

On August 30, 2010, in NEW CHALLENGE, by Ollie

Been wondering what time the sun rises and sets while we’re riding? Well I have, but maybe that’s because I’m sad!

Anyway, for those of you interested, the sun sets for us riders every day at around 20:02 CEST- central european summer time, which is an hour ahead of BST. It doesn’t change by more than a minute or two for the entire 9 days ride due to the fact that we’re riding west.

The sun rises at 7:33 (CEST) on our first full morning in France and creeps up to 7:58 by the time we leave San Sebastian 7 days later. It remains to be seen whether any riders will actually see that sunrise given that we’ll have spent the night before exploring San Sebastian!

Less than 5 weeks to go and training is now well under way for all the riders. Training distances are steadily increasing in preparation for our little 800 mile jaunt through France.

Although some would question the choice of refreshment stop, rumour has it that Mark Cavendish was in this very establishment only half an hour before….

A veteran of all three previous rides and one of the founder members of the Helmets, Thomas will again be leading the way on all descents. He has over the three campaigns become the undisputed ‘King of the Downhills’. Tried to dispose of his bike in Pisa but has now dusted it down for his swansong.

An ever present for the Helmets and one of the founder members cycling on all of the past rides, Binny is the chief mechanic for the team and route planner. In between fixing bikes and punctures he does enjoy cycling.

Killer

Killer did just the one challenge in 2002 and is the only person to have been knocked off his bike by a car on route to Wigan. He also holds the record for the least amount of training miles prior to a ride, a total 4 miles from his home in Rastrick to Hartshead Club.

Tommy

Tommy has ridden all three previous challenges and is the man soley responsible for the large increase in Sudacrem profits from 2002 -2004. It looks like he has hung up his cycling shoes for the time being but there is still time for him to change his mind.

John

John by his own admission ‘loved’ every minute of his first ride in 2003 and was gutted to miss the 2004 challenge over the Alps into Italy. Now vowing to make a comeback and ditch the Harley for his Massi 18 speed road bike, his vast wardrobe of bandanas will certainly add colour to the ride.
